Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Welcome to Jora. Jora ("we", "us", or "our") operates the Jora mobile applications and the website joranow.com (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your personal information when you use our Service.

By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree with any part of this policy, please discontinue use of the Service.

This policy applies to all users of the Jora platform, including riders booking trips through the Jora Rider app, drivers accepting trips through the Jora Driver app, and visitors to our website joranow.com.

Because Jora operates two separate mobile applications serving different user groups, this policy clearly distinguishes where data practices differ between riders and drivers.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information You Provide

All users (riders and drivers):

  • Account registration: full name, email address, phone number, and profile photo.
  • Communications: messages sent to our support team or through in-app chat.
  • Ratings & feedback: post-trip star ratings and written feedback submitted after every trip.

Riders specifically:

  • Ride requests: pickup location, drop-off destination, and the fare the rider proposes to pay.
  • Scheduled rides: future pickup date, time, and location for advance bookings.
  • Hired car requests: pickup location, duration, and trip purpose for multi-hour hire bookings.
  • Trip sharing contacts: phone number or contact name of a trusted person you choose to share your live trip with (stored only on your device and used only when you activate the feature).
  • SOS reports: incident description and location submitted through the in-app SOS button.

Drivers specifically:

  • Driver onboarding: government-issued ID (NIN, Voter's Card, or Driver's Licence), vehicle details (make, model, year, colour, plate number), and proof-of-vehicle-ownership documents.
  • Ride preferences: whether a driver accepts instant rides, hired car requests, or both.
  • Online status: whether a driver is currently available and accepting trips.

2.2 Information Collected Automatically

  • Precise location data: GPS coordinates collected while the app is in use to match riders with nearby drivers, display real-time trip progress, and provide navigation. For drivers, location may also be collected in the background while they are online and available for trips. Riders' location is only collected while the Jora Rider app is actively open.
  • Device information: device model, operating system version, unique device identifiers, and mobile network information.
  • Usage data: screens viewed, features used, timestamps, crash logs, and app performance data.
  • Trip data: route taken, distance, duration, and agreed fare for every completed trip, recorded for both the rider and driver involved.
  • Ride status events: timestamps for when a ride is requested, accepted, started, and completed.

2.3 Information from Third Parties

  • Authentication provider (Authgear): we use Authgear to manage sign-in. Authgear provides us with your user identifier and basic profile information upon authentication.
  • Google Maps: we use Google Maps APIs for location search, route display, and navigation. Google's own Privacy Policy governs data processed by their services.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

For all users:

  • Create and manage your Jora account.

4. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We may share your information in the following circumstances:

4.1 Between Riders and Drivers

To facilitate a trip, we share relevant information between the matched rider and driver. This includes first name, profile photo, vehicle details, real-time location during the trip, and ratings history.

4.2 Service Providers

We share information with trusted third-party vendors who perform services on our behalf, such as cloud hosting, authentication, mapping, analytics, and customer support. These providers are contractually obligated to keep your data confidential and use it only to provide the services we request.

4.3 Legal Requirements

We may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or government authority, or where we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others.

4.4 Business Transfers

If Jora is involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, your personal information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

5. Camera & Location Permissions

5.1 Camera

Both the Jora Rider and Jora Driver apps may request access to your device camera. Camera access is used solely for:

  • Profile photo (riders & drivers): you may take or choose a photo to set or update your in-app profile picture.
  • Document upload (drivers only): drivers use the camera to photograph and upload government-issued ID, vehicle registration, and proof-of-ownership documents during the onboarding process.

We do not record video, stream camera footage, or access the camera in the background. Camera images are only uploaded when you explicitly tap the upload button. Riders who do not wish to set a profile photo are never required to grant camera access.

5.2 Location

Precise location access is core to how Jora works for both riders and drivers.

Riders:

  • Your location is used to display your position on the map and auto-fill your pickup point.
  • It is shared with your matched driver so they can navigate to you.
  • During an active trip, your location is tracked to monitor the route for safety.
  • When you activate the trip-sharing feature, your live location is shared with the contact you choose.
  • Location is only collected while the Jora Rider app is open and in the foreground.

Drivers:

  • Your location is broadcast to nearby riders while you are online and available.
  • It is shared with the matched rider so they can track your arrival.
  • During an active trip, your location is tracked to record the route and calculate the fare.
  • Background location may be collected while you are marked as online in the Jora Driver app, even if the app is not in the foreground, so riders can find you.

You can revoke location permission at any time in your device settings; however, doing so will prevent the core ride-hailing features from functioning.

6. Data Retention

We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you with the Service. Specifically:

  • Account data is retained until you request account deletion.
  • Trip history is retained for a minimum of 12 months for safety and dispute-resolution purposes.
  • Driver documents are retained for the duration of the driver's active relationship with Jora and for up to 2 years thereafter to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Communication logs with our support team are retained for up to 3 years.

After the applicable retention period, we securely delete or anonymise your data.

7. Data Security

We implement industry-standard technical and organisational measures to protect your personal information against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. These measures include:

  • Encrypted data transmission over HTTPS/TLS.
  • Secure authentication and token management via Authgear.
  • Role-based access controls limiting employee access to personal data.
  • Regular security assessments of our infrastructure.

No method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security. If you become aware of any security breach, please contact us immediately at hello.joranow@gmail.com.

The Jora Service is not directed to children under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we become aware that a child under 18 has provided us with personal information, we will take steps to delete that information promptly. If you believe we may have inadvertently collected information from a minor, please contact us at hello.joranow@gmail.com.
